Java’s "improvements"

Java v1.5 has entered beta testing. This is all fine and good; real-world use has a way of pushing a programming language into maturity. But once again, the PR hype has subjugated truth. From the linked article:

Because the compiler, unlike the programmer, never makes mistakes…

Compilers never make mistakes? Then why is there a link to the Java Bug Database immediately to the left of that quote? Even the Free Software Foundation wouldn’t declare their own compilers to be bug-free.

And, to top it all off, a Ph.D. said this. If this is what passes for doctoral aptitude at Carnegie-Mellon, I’ll get my degree from somewhere else.
